Gantefuhrer-Trier Anne Cubism

Pioneered by Picasso and Braque, Cubism was the first avant-garde art movement of the 20th century. Heavily influenced by the stark power of African and Native American art and sculpture, it deconstructed conventions of viewpoint and perspective, revolutionizing painting and western art in general. With its flattened, geometric shapes, overlapping, simplified forms and fragmented spatial planes, Cubism became one of the most influential and far-reaching movements in modern art. This book explains the history and theory behind Cubism, examining the work of its prime movers, and those whose work built upon it. Featured artists: Pablo Picasso, Edmond Fortier, Paul Cezanne, George Braque, Henri Le Fauconnier, Jean Metzinger, Fernand Leger, Juan Gris, Albert Gleizes, Henri Laurens, Salvador Dali, Brassai, Robert Delaunay, Raymond Duchamp-Villon.

Willi Bloess Milestones of Art: Pablo Picasso: The King

Involved in expressionism, cubism, and surrealism, Picasso was an outstanding painter during the first half of the 20th century. Innumerable publications to his person have appeared. By developing a cubistic-influenced comic style, author Willi Bloess and illustrator Thomas Thiesen come close to their aim: explaining art by art.

Krystof Doris Amedeo Modigliani

In endless odes to the female form, Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) traced elongated bodies, almond eyes, and his own name into art history. His languid female subjects are as instantly recognizable as they are startling, sensual, and swan-necked. Modigliani's unique figuration corresponded to his own personal idea of beauty, but drew upon a rich variety of visual influences, including contemporary Cubism, African carvings, Cambodian sculptures, and 13th-century painting from his native Italy. Although most renowned for his nude females, he applied similar stylistic techniques to portraits of male artistic contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and Chaim Soutine. With key works from his highly individualistic repertoire, this book introduces Modigliani's brief but revered career at the heart of Paris's early modernist hotbed.

Guillaume Apollinaire Alcools

Alcools, first published in 1913 and one of the few indispensable books of twentieth- century poetry, provides a key to the century's history and consciousness. Champion of «cubism», Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) fashions in verse the sonic equivalent of what Picasso accomplishes in his cubist works: simultaneity. Apollinaire has been so influential that without him there would have been no New York School of poetry and no Beat Movement. This new translation reveals his complex, beautiful, and wholly contemporary poetry. Printed with the original French on facing pages, this is the only version of this seminal work of French Modernism currently available in the United States.

Mink Janis Joan Miro. 1893-1983. The Poet Among the Surrealists

Joan Miro is one of the most significant Spanish painters of the twentieth century. His early work clearly shows the influence of Fauvism and Cubism. The Catalan landscape also shapes the themes and treatment of these initial works. In his travels, Mirо encountered the intellectual avant-garde of his time; his friends included Francis Picabia, Tristan Tzara, Andr? Masson, Jean Arp and Pablo Picasso. From the mid-twenties onward, Mirо strove to leave direct objective references behind and developed the pictograms that typify his style. The pictures of this period, which include perhaps the most beautiful and significant ones of his whole oeuvre, dispense with spatiality and an unambiguous reference to objects. From then on, the surfaces were defined by numerals, writing, abstract emblems, and playful figures and creatures. The year 1944 saw the beginning of his extensive graphic oeuvre, ceramics, monumental mural works, and sculptures. In these works, too, the Catalan artist sought the solid foundation of a figurative, symbolic art with orientation as regards content: faces, stars, moons, rudimentary animal forms, letters. Joan Mirо developed in several stages his characteristic flowing calligraphic style and his world of forms resembling shorthand symbols; from Fauvism to Surrealism by way of his original childlike style, Mirо sought to shake up the establishment and made a name for himself in doing so.

Duchting Hajo Cezanne

Perhaps best known for his exceptional apples and pears, Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) was one of the founding fathers of modern art. Though he was underappreciated and highly criticized during his life, as time passed Cezanne's work came to be considered of inestimable importance. His method of experimentation with abstraction and perspective was an important precursor to modern painting, particularly cubism. About the author: Hajo Duchting (b. 1949 in Dusseldorf) studied art history, philosophy and archaeology in Munich, where he gained his doctorate in 1981 with a thesis on Robert Delaunay's Windows series. After working in museum and adult education, he moved on to teaching posts and guest professorships at the universities of Munich, Kassel, Leipzig, Saarbrucken and Mainz. Since 2004 he has taught painting and colour theory at the Mediadesign Akademie in Munich. Duchting has published numerous articles on the art of the modern era, colour theory and the teaching of art and has authored a number of TASCHEN titles, including Paul Cezanne (1988), Wassily Kandinsky (1990); Robert and Sonia Delaunay (1993) and Georges Seurat (1999). Sylvia Martin, Uta Grosenic Futurism (Basic Art) HC

Inspired by the development of Cubism, the Futurist movement was founded in 1909 by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, along with painters Giacomo Balla. Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carra, and Gino Severini. The school, which celebrated technology and the mechanical era, was comprised of painters, sculptors, designers, architects, and writers. Motion and machines were two main themes of this movement, which attacked the bastions of establishment and sparked controversy by its glorification of war and support of Fascism. Experimenting with movement, and speed, and abstract light and color, the Futurists developed approaches and techniques that were revolutionary at the time, and in retrospect one can see that the Futurists influenced other avant-garde art movements, most notably Russian Constructivism. Artists featured: Giacomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Anton Giulio Bragaglia, Carlo Carra, Tullio Crali, Fortunato Depero, Gerardo Dottori, Leonardo Dudreville, Virgilio Marchi, F.T. Marinetti, Enrico Prampolini, Luigi Russolo, Antonio Sant'Elia, Gino Severini. Mario Sironi, Ardengo Soffici.

David Maddock Roger Fry, Clive Bell and American Modernism

When the Bloomsbury critics Roger Fry and Clive Bell introduced an aesthetically conservative English public to recent Parisian avant-garde painting, they explained its disconcerting imagery by way of a late nineteenth-century metaphysical tradition which had long intrigued musicians and Symbolist writers on the European continent. The Post-Impressionist aesthetic they devised advocated a direct response to the formal ingenuity of the work of art without recourse to prior knowledge and emphasized the significance of visionary genius, albeit to the detriment of narrative acuity and technical accomplishment, values hitherto upheld by the Edwardian art establishment. The provocation was calculated, the author suggests, and its domestic ramifications were predictable: the reaction of an Anglo-conformist public in New York, on the other hand, was anything but. Recreating an Anglo-American dialogue inspired by Fry and Bell, and framed within a period encompassing Fry’s Manet and the Post-Impressionists exhibition in 1910 and Alfred Barr Jr’s Cubism and Abstract Art exhibition in 1936, the author demonstrates how key components of Bloomsbury’s aesthetic bypassed a pre-existent modernist practice in New York and were instead taken up by an urban intelligentsia which adapted them to the requirements of an increasingly professionalized institutional practice during the 1920s.
